The story behind the brand/rum:
Engenho Novo da Madeira is a company that is passionate about transforming sugar cane into Agricole Rum under the William Hinton brand, as well as producing liquors using traditional techniques and locally selected fruits. We also produce a unique Vermouth that is made with Madeira Wine, which is the first and only of its kind! Founded in 2006 by one of the heirs of the Hinton family, who were the owners of Europe’s largest sugar cane processing plant, the “Fábrica do Torreão”. We inherited our centenary column still from this plant, which we still use today to extract our rum. Under the leadership of this new generation of entrepreneurs, the historic legacy of the Hinton brand has been reborn, and Rum da Madeira is now our main focus. Our values of experience, authenticity, innovation, and transparent communication are at the core of the William Hinton brand. We are proud to say that our products are now available in over twenty international markets, and we received the “Portuguese Product of the Year” award at the Lisbon Bar Show, which is the most prestigious spirits fair in Portugal. We have a big history with sugarcane that dates back to the early colonization days, and we have learned how to take advantage of the natural conditions offered by our beautiful island. For example, we created irrigation channels called “levadas,” which span 2200 km across the island to bring water from the north to the south. These levadas were built by hand and are fundamental for agriculture. They are also an attraction for tourists and locals who appreciate their beauty.

“Rum of great aromatic complexity, with an emphasis on vanilla and wood.

Appearance: This Agricole rum boasts a clear, bright color with alluring amber hues and abundant copper reflections that shimmer in the glass.
Aroma: Crafted from a blend of five rums aged in barrels from diverse origins, this four-year-old rum offers an impressive aromatic intensity and a bouquet of great richness and complexity. The fragrance begins with fresh, resinous notes and evolves into a captivating blend of caramel, chocolate, smoked nuances, dried fruits (such as green walnut), and dried vegetable notes, with a distinct emphasis on hay and tobacco.
Flavor: With its well-structured and round body, this rum offers a warm and frank taste on the palate. Saline and balanced, it delights the senses with flavors of caramel, black pepper, licorice, nuts, and toasted oak. The finish is distinct and fine, with a dryness that lingers for a medium-long time. This is a must-try rum for anyone who appreciates a balanced and complex spirit with a persistent finish.
